Do you teach grades 4 to 12 in Canada? Would your class like to do cool projects with some of the latest data or photos from Canada’s professional telescopes, then make a virtual field trip to one of Canada’s observatories and talk to astronomers or engineers about their work? We also feature girls-only conversations with female astronomers and engineers. Our Canadian Youth Exploring Space - CanYES - programme offers extraordinary opportunities for students, particularly students in remote communities.

Students who have come to the DAO on field trips have typically been from the Greater Victoria area or nearby communities, and their visits have centered on the what can be seen at the Centre of the Universe and the Plaskett Telescope dome.  In this new initiative we will use modern communication technology to take students from across Canada into the labs where engineers and instrument designers work, and remote mountain top observatories like the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Students will also have a chance to work with the latest data acquired and discuss it with scientists and engineers. Finally, they will learn where to find the object in the night sky and discover the stories about the constellation in which each object resides.

This programme is led by the Friends of the DAO and conducted in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Victoria Centre). Financial support is provided by the PromoScience programme of Canada’s National Science and Engineering Research Council, TELUS, and donations by the public to the Friends of the DAO. All donations to the Friends of the DAO are tax deductible.
